A hair restoration procedure, promoted internationally by former cricketing ace Shane Warne, was put in the dock today by a hair loss victim and found wanting by a judge.

Judge Raymond Groarke held it would have been ridiculous for garage worker Jeremy Keogh to have believed that having a wig or membrane glued to his head would have the effect of causing his hair to re-grow.

He said Keogh (aged 29) of St Killian’s Crescent, Staplestown Road, Co Carlow, had succeeded however in convincing the court he had not been provided with what he thought he had purchased at Advanced Hair Studios, Dublin, in March 2009.

Well-known hair restoration company Clive Hair Clinics is being challenged by competitor SRS Hair Clinics over advertising claims.

SRS director C Sidhu made a raft of complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority’s complaints board about Clive Clinics’ website, television, yellow pages, billboards and newspaper advertisements.

In dealing with issues it probably would have preferred not to rule on, the ASA board partially upheld some of SRS’s complaints relating to statements made on Clive’s website, but did not uphold those about its other advertisements.

In the UK £5.2 billion is spent every year on anti-ageing and diet products yet 45% of women say that losing their hair is their greatest fear above sagging skin (12%) and gaining weight (12%), leading experts to call for a wider acknowledgement and understanding of the psychological impact of female hair loss.

Top employees at Taiwan Svenson Hair Co were indicted on fraud charges yesterday for allegedly selling common shampoo products with no medical properties at unreasonably high prices.

The Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office yesterday indicted the owner of the company, Chen Ying-chi, 48, and four of the company’s officials.

Prosecutors said Svenson has run seven stores in Taiwan since 2005. The company sells 47 highly priced hair health and restoration products and offers courses on hair health and rejuvenation.

Research on the fungus that ranks as one cause of dandruff – the embarrassing nuisance that, by some accounts, afflicts half of humanity – is pointing scientists toward a much-needed new treatment for the condition’s flaking and itching. The advance is the topic of a report in ACS’ Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

Claudiu T. Supuran and colleagues explain that dandruff involves an excessive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. In people without dandruff, it takes about 30 days for a crop of new skin cells to mature, die and shed. In people with dandruff, it may take only 2-7 days.

Irritation by the scalp-dwelling fungus Malassezia globosa (M. globosa) is one cause of dandruff. Shampoos and other dandruff treatments contain anti-fungal agents, but the authors say new medicines are badly needed since the two existing compounds are not very effective at preventing and treating dandruff.
